What does ISO 9001 Certified mean?

To become ISO 9001 Certified, a company must institute management systems which meet international standards of manufacturing quality and then have their procedures approved by a team of independent auditors.

So, what is the meaning behind the lingo?

ISO - is an abbreviation for the ‘International Organization for Standardization.’ Located in Geneva, Switzerland, the ISO was created to promote standards development and facilitate the international exchange of goods and services. More than 90 countries including the United States belong to the ISO.

9001 - is the most rigorous ISO conformance standard. 9001 covers the quality system from design through production to servicing at the customer’s site.

Certified - means that an independent team of auditors has verified that a company follows the ISO procedures. It can take 18 months and several attempts to achieve certification. ISO certifies a company’s process, not their products. ISO 9001 certification is not permanent; an outside team audits procedures every six months. Quality must be maintained to keep certification.
